As part of our commitment to offering exceptional lifestyle amenities, we’re excited to introduce two professional-grade pickleball courts exclusively for owners, their families, and guests. These courts are designed to foster fun, fitness, and connection, making them a perfect addition to the Motor Condos experience.

What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a fast-growing, paddle-based sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played with solid paddles and a perforated ball similar to a wiffle ball, it’s easy to learn, highly engaging, and suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. The game is typically played on a court roughly the size of a badminton court, making it accessible and less physically demanding than some other sports, while still offering a great workout.

The Origins of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three friends—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. Looking for a fun activity to entertain their families, they improvised a game using ping-pong paddles, a perforated ball, and a lowered badminton net. The sport’s quirky name is said to come from Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball. Since its humble beginnings, pickleball has exploded in popularity, becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. We are excited to offer a space to play at our Minnesota based car condo project.

How Pickleball Is Played: Basic Rules

Pickleball is easy to pick up, making it a fantastic activity for Motor Condos owners and their guests. Here’s a quick overview of how it’s played:

  • Court and Equipment: Played on a 44×20-foot court with a net (34 inches high at the center), players use solid paddles to hit a perforated ball.
  • Gameplay: Matches can be singles or doubles, with doubles being the most common. The objective is to score points by hitting the ball over the net and landing it in the opponent’s court.
  • Serving: The serve must be underhand and diagonal, landing in the opponent’s service court. The serving team scores points when the opposing team faults (e.g., fails to return the ball or hits it out of bounds).
  • Non-Volley Zone: A 7-foot area on either side of the net, known as the “kitchen,” prevents players from volleying (hitting the ball before it bounces) while standing inside it.
  • Scoring: Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by 2. Only the serving team can score points.
  • Rally: After the serve, players rally until a fault occurs, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net.

The simplicity of the rules, combined with the strategic depth, makes pickleball endlessly enjoyable for beginners and seasoned players alike.
